On April 10, 2017, Sophomore Jay Nesson made Mason Baseball History by throwing a complete game no-hitter. Nesson threw for no runs, on no hits, with two walks, and eight strikeouts. His name will soon be added to the list of Mason no-hitters in the Mason Hall of Fame next to the Mary Ellen Henderson Gym.

Nesson’s achievement came against Robert E. Lee High School, during a Spring Break tournament, which resulted in an 8-0 win for Mason.

“[Lee] was overall okay hitting-wise, but the top of their lineup was clearly more dominant, so those were my toughest outs,” said Nesson.

Mason’s offense supported Nesson throughout the game. Players with hits included Nesson, Thomas Dean, Thomas Creed, Zach Lang, Sean Butler, David Miller, and Jack Rasmussen; Dean and Creed had two hits each.

“The offense struggled in the beginning, but there was pressure to score runs and support Jay, so we ended up picking it up and scored a couple of runs towards the end,” said offensive leader Thomas Dean.

Nesson does not attribute his performance to any one specific thing, but rather multiple different factors.

“My arm was feeling great and [Mason Catcher Sean] Butler called a great game, and I trusted both my off speed and my fastball to the extent where I wasn’t even thinking,” said Nesson.

Head Coach Adam Amerine was impressed with Nesson’s performance.

“[Nesson] was able to locate both his fastball and offspeed pitches for strikes all afternoon. It was a very impressive performance for the sophomore,” said Amerine.
